Burlington Resources Foundation Completes $1.5 Million Pledge of Support to Texas Heart Institute
HOUSTON (May 18, 2006) The Texas Heart Institute (THI) has received a contribution of $300,000 from Burlington Resources Foundation, completing a five-year $1.5 million commitment to advance THI’s programs in cardiovascular research and education. Burlington Resources, Inc. recently became a wholly-owned subsidiary of ConocoPhillips.
“Grants from the Burlington Resources Foundation have provided significant support for our programs over the past five years. They have helped us achieve advances in the development and refinement of heart assist devices and in our adult stem cell research. The Foundation has also enabled us to expand the services of our Heart Information Center and the content of our website, which was accessed by more than two million unique visitors last year,” said Denton A. Cooley, M.D., president and surgeon-in-chief of the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital.
Dr. Cooley noted that THI has also benefited from the leadership and expertise of Mr. Bobby Shackouls, who serves as vice chairman of the THI Board of Trustees and a member of the Finance Committee. Mr. Shackouls is the former chairman, CEO and president of Burlington Resources, Inc.
“At Burlington Resources, we believed in being a good corporate citizen and supporting the communities in which our employees lived and worked,” said Mr. Gavin Smith, a vice president of Burlington and president of the Burlington Foundation. “The Texas Heart Institute and the Texas Medical Center are a vital part of the Houston community, and Burlington was proud to support these organizations.”
