Dr. Denton A. Cooley, surgeon-in-chief, founder and president-emeritus of Texas Heart Institute, has contributed immensely to the field of cardiovascular surgery for children and adults, both in the United States and abroad. To celebrate his legacy, the Denton A. Cooley Lectureship in Cardiovascular Surgery was established to bring the world's finest visiting professors to teach future generations of cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons in keeping with the example established by Dr. Cooley. The lectures occur annually at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. 

Noteworthy:

• 1962 – Texas Heart Institute became a reality, chartered on August 3rd at the Capitol of Texas
• 1972 – 10 years later, the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society was formed by cardiovascular surgical staff and trainees at THI
• 1987 – Texas Heart Institute celebrates 25 Years of Excellence
• 2007 – 20 years later, the Denton A. Cooley Lectureship is launched to promote excellence in education for our staff and trainees, and to honor Dr. Cooley's legacy.

• 2010 – Lecture by Dr. Tirone David
• 2011 – Lecture by Dr. Frank Spencer
