August 2008—Special Presentations Enhance Resources

"A Coordinated Approach to Childhood Obesity" is a narrated slide presentation now available on the Project Heart website. Another presentation covers hypertension in children. Both are intended for teachers, school nurses, parents, or others who work with children.

July 2008—News Feature Added

"In the News" is a new feature for the Project Heart community. Check the page often for the latest articles about kids health, nutrition, and fitness issues.

January 2008—Website Honored for 3rd Year
Website honored with Award of Excellence. Click to learn more.
The Texas Heart Institute website is one of only 6 websites to receive an Aesculapius Award of Excellence in 2007 from the Health Improvement Institute, in recognition of excellence in the communication of information about healthy lifestyles, disease prevention and health care. This award is our 3rd consecutive honor.
 
December 2007—Grade 6 Curriculum is Complete 
Learn the best food choices for fueling a healthy body and the best activities for strengthening your heart. Nutrition and exercise lesson plans  round out the curriculum for Grade 6.

August 2007—Grant Will Support Enhancements 
The Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation is providing a $1 million grant to Texas Heart Institute to establish an endowment to enable enhancement of Project Heart resources. Read the press release and stay tuned for further developments.
 
July 2007—Get Fit with 5th Grade
Exercise Lesson PlansThe exercise lesson plan completes the curriculum for Grade 5. Explore a variety of ways for students to keep their hearts healthy. Look for the soccer ball icon in each grade level.
 
March 2007—Nutrition Month 
Nutrition Lesson PlansMake good nutrition part of a heart-healthy classroom; use the nutrition lesson for each grade level (look for the apple icon). Suggested Links lists myriad nutrition-oriented websites with resources and activities. For example, visit the American Dietetic Association for teacher activities promoting "Fad Free" eating.
 
January 2007—Lessons for Nutrition and Exercise Online 
Featuring calorie calculation activities and step trails, lesson plans 2 and 3 are now online, completing the curriculum for Grade 4.

—"Suggested Links" Expand
As Project Heart lesson plans and activities develop, we discover new resources on the Internet that complement the curriculum. Visit the suggested links page often to discover some great websites for teachers, parents, and kids. And, we invite you to tell us about your favorite site so we can share it here.
 
December 2006—New Vitamins & Minerals Lesson
Just added to the Project Heart curriculum, the nutrition lesson for fifth grade encourages students to have fun learning why vitamins and minerals are important for a healthy heart. Action heroes, crossword puzzles, and personal dictionaries are just a few of the activities included.

October 2006—The Risks of Hypertension
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a growing problem for school children. Learn to recognize its symptoms by viewing a special presentation just added to the Project Heart website.  
 
August 2006—Grade 6 Anatomy Lesson Debuts
How does the Cardiovascular System Work? Find out about the circulatory system, blood cells, and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, in the sixth grade anatomy materials.

In addition, TEKS references are noted for each grade level and a new feedback form makes it easy to send in your evaluations, questions, and suggestions.
 
—Visiting Teachers Preview New Animations

July 2006—Curriculum Expands
Grade 4: What Are Coronary Arteries?Resources expand with new lessons for fourth and fifth grades, focusing on coronary arteries and the conduction system. Activity masters for “feeding” the heart and making flipbooks to show electrical conduction are accompanied by illustrations of blood and the vascular system.

April 2006—Resources Expand with Added Links
Several new websites have been added to Suggested Links. Square Meals is a Texas Department of Agriculture program. Look for "A Serving of Fun" booklet in the Kids section. Powerful Girls have Powerful Bones is an interactive site for 9- to 12-year old girls. 5 A Day the Color Way promotes healthy eating with fruits and vegetables. 
 
February 2006—Teachers Respond
Teachers met with members of the Project Heart team in recognition of American Heart Month. Hear what they have to say in the news release.
 
January 2006—Educational Website Makes News
Project Heart “extends the community outreach mission to educators” according to news release. Educators are getting the message; visitors to the site more than doubled in January. Favorite page views include the Look section.
 
December 2005—Animation and Links Enhance Resources
Anatomy gets more animated as 3D movies and heart sounds are added to Look and Listen sections. A suggested links added is a reciprocal link to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
 
November 2005—Project Heart Website Opens
The Project Heart website, a health resource for teachers, parents, and students, was launched by the Texas Heart Institute. With lesson plans at its core, the site is designed to help teachers develop activities for the classroom about the heart, healthy eating, and an active lifestyle. Not limited to teachers, the site provides a wealth of information, activities, and resources for any learning environment.
 
June 2005—Project Heart Team Formulates Plan
A group of local teachers, principals, school nurses, and educators met for a daylong workshop at the Texas Heart Institute to plan the initial concept for Project Heart. At this June meeting, ideas were formulated and an ambitious timetable put in place. Team members toured the Denton A. Cooley building, including the Heart Information Center and the Wallace D. Wilson Museum. Highlights of the day were the opportunity to witness live surgery and being greeted in person by Dr. Denton Cooley.
