CME Information - Overview

Prehypertension is associated with excessive cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This is not only due to higher blood pressure but also reflects the association of prehypertension with a number of cardiovascular risk factors. The current JNC7 recommends lifestyle modification for such patients. However, prehypertension is a precursor of treatment-requiring hypertension (the incidence exceeds 10% per year), and all patients with prehypertension must be followed to detect hypertension in a timely fashion. The unique physiological features of patients with prehypertension are discussed.

Educational Objectives
The intended result of this activity is increased knowledge. At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to-

Summarize the importance of the association of risk factors in prehypertension.
Distinguish tachycardia as a cardiovascular risk factor.
Recognize the difference between primary and secondary prevention in the management of patients with hypertension.

Target Audience
The intended audience for this continuing medical education activity includes cardiologists, physicians, cardiovascular surgeons and internists with an interest in the latest treatment options for hypertension.

Method of Instruction / Participation
This enduring material comprises slide sets with text and audio derived from a live cardiology grand rounds presentation with post activity assessment and evaluation.
