A Beautiful Painting by THI Artist and Scientist Unveiled
Born in Berlin, Shahrzad Abbasi has always loved and appreciated art. At a very young age, she began painting and pursued formal training in Siena, Italy at Murex Bottega D’Arte and in Houston, Texas at the Glassell School of Art. She recently shared that talent with her colleagues at The Texas Heart Institute, during the unveiling of a painting she created for display in the Office of Research Administration suite.
While traveling in New York and throughout Europe, Shahrzad was inspired by different artists using balloons and butterflies in their work. “I included butterflies in the piece because they represent the transformation a patient goes through during their care journey, and the balloon against a beautiful blue sky symbolizes hope,” she explained to the research, education, and patient-care teams who attended the unveiling.
She has been part of The Institute since 2006 and is currently a Research Associate I in the Molecular Cardiology Research Laboratories. She earned her Masters in Pathophysiology from the University of Siena (Università degli Studi di Siena) in Tuscany and prepared her thesis on heart perfusion, ischemia, and reconditioning in collaboration with Gues and St. Thomas in London.
Her artwork will be on display in The Texas Heart Institute Research area of the Denton A. Cooley building.
