Advanced Cardiac Imaging Specialist Hector M. Medina, MD, MPH, Joins The Texas Heart Institute Center for Cardiovascular Care

HOUSTON (February 9, 2024) – The Texas Heart Institute announces that Hector M. Medina, MD, MPH, has joined The Texas Heart Institute Center for Cardiovascular Care as the Section Head of Advanced Cardiac Imaging – Cardiac Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Dr. Medina brings extensive experience and expertise in cardiac imaging, making him a valuable addition to our team.

Dr. Medina’s background includes a fellowship in adult cardiac imaging, specializing in cardiac CT and cardiac MRI, at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He also completed a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at The Texas Heart Institute and Baylor College of Medicine, after training in internal medicine during a residency at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Medina holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from Pontificia Javeriana University in Bogotá, Colombia, where he was a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) honor society. He furthered his education by obtaining a Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics from Johns Hopkins University.

Before joining The Texas Heart Institute, Dr. Medina held positions as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center – Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Baylor Scott and White – Texas A&M University. He also served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at El Rosario University in Bogotá, Colombia, where he was the Director of Cardiac Imaging at LaCardio.

Throughout his career, Dr. Medina has made significant contributions to the field of cardiac imaging. He established a program for the safe utilization of cardiovascular MR (CMR) in patients with chronic renal insufficiency and end-stage renal disease. In addition, Dr. Medina played a crucial role in expanding the Cardiac Computed Tomography Angiography (cCTA) service.

Dr. Medina’s dedication to education is evident through his contributions as the cardiology fellowship program director at El Rosario University, where he developed and coordinated the core curriculum for cardiology fellows and created a comprehensive curriculum for critical appraisal and medical literature interpretation for their division of cardiology.

He also organized numerous educational events, including heart-team Grand Rounds and International Cardiac Imaging and Heart Failure Symposiums featuring renowned speakers from around the world.
