Exploring the Future of Stem Cell Therapy in Cardiac Care: A Collaboration Between The Texas Heart Institute and Rice University

On Friday, September 13, 2024, the Rice University Baker Institute Center for Health and Biosciences and The Texas Heart Institute presented “Stem Cell Therapy for Cardiac Care: Moving Forward” as part of their annual stem cell policy series. Rice University’s Owl Have You Know podcasting host, Maya Pomroy, led the discussion with physician-scientists Drs. Deepak Srivastava and Emerson C. Perin, and Baker Institute Fellow and policy expert Dr. Kirstin R.W. Matthews.

The 8th Annual Stem Cell Policy Series is a collaboration between the Baker Institute for Public Policy and The Texas Heart Institute, sponsored by the George and Mary Josephine Hamman Foundation.

Dr. Perin shared decades of groundbreaking work that has led to promising phase 3 trials and cutting-edge technologies designed to deliver these revolutionary cell therapies to patients. Dr. Srivastava captivated the audience with insights into the potential of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to regenerate heart muscle and unlock new treatments for a wide array of diseases. Adding another important layer to the conversation, Dr. Matthews explored the ethical and policy challenges that come with these advancements in biotechnology.

As stem cell therapy continues to evolve, it’s clear that collaboration between researchers, clinicians, and policymakers will be essential to ensuring that these innovative treatments not only advance cardiac care but do so in a way that is practical, accessible, and ethically sound.

The Texas Heart Institute and the Baker Institute remain committed to driving these critical discussions, helping pave the way for the next generation of heart therapies. Stay tuned as we continue to explore the potential of stem cell therapy and its life-changing impact on cardiac care.
