Dr. Gary Roubin Awarded the Texas Heart Institute’s Highest Honor with the 2024 Ray C. Fish Award for Scientific Achievement

Houston, Texas (Jan 19, 2024) – Dr. Gary Roubin has received The Texas Heart Institute (THI) 2024 Ray C. Fish Award for Scientific Achievement for his pioneering work in coronary artery and carotid stenting and the development of the first FDA-approved coronary stent. The prestigious Ray C. Fish Award honors cardiologists and cardiac surgeons from around the world whose innovations have contributed significantly to cardiovascular medicine and surgery.

The Institute’s President and CEO, Dr. Joseph G. Rogers, and The Texas Heart Institute Journal’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Zvonimir Krajcer, presented the annual award at a special reception Thursday, January 11, and during The Texas Heart Institute Cardiology Grand Rounds. In accepting the award, Dr. Roubin delivered an enlightening presentation, “Carotid Stenting: State of the Art.

Dr. Roubin, an esteemed figure in the field of interventional cardiology and peripheral medicine, is highly regarded for his immense contributions to the field. His outstanding work includes more than 280 papers and 225 abstracts in peer-reviewed journals.

Additionally, his expertise has been instrumental in editing three textbooks on interventional cardiovascular medicine, explicitly focusing on coronary and carotid artery stenting. Furthermore, Dr. Roubin’s involvement in writing 20 textbooks on interventional cardiology and vascular medicine attests to his unparalleled knowledge and dedication.

One of Dr. Roubin’s remarkable accomplishments was publishing his book, “The First Balloon Expandable Coronary Stent: An Expedition that Changed Cardiovascular Medicine,” in 2015. This publication is a testament to his pioneering work and impact in the field.

Throughout the past decade, Dr. Roubin has steadfastly championed the implementation of optimally designed “fine mesh” stents. The first Ray C. Fish Award for Scientific Achievement in Cardiovascular Diseases was presented in 1972 to Dr. Norman Shumway, a cardiovascular surgeon who pioneered the heart transplant operation. More than 40 highly deserving recipients have been honored by THI.

Ray C. Fish was a philanthropist and a leading figure in Houston’s natural gas industry. Mr. Fish believed in the “American dream” of opportunity for success. He established the Ray C. Fish Foundation in 1959 to encourage broadening humankind’s self-knowledge and nurturing the American dream. After its founder’s death from heart disease, the Fish Foundation granted $5 million to make THI a reality. For this reason, THI’s highest professional award is given in honor of this extraordinary man.
