Kinder Institute’s Houston Area Survey Explores Physical Activity

The Kinder Institute for Urban Research held its annual luncheon on Monday, May 15. As one of Rice University’s most anticipated events of the year, the event unites hundreds of business, nonprofit, and community leaders to learn about the leading issues facing Houston, our region, and the country.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner was honored with the Stephen L. Klineberg Award and findings from the 42nd Kinder Houston Area Survey were presented by Kinder Institute Director Dr. Ruth N. López Turley.

This year, the Kinder Institute included questions about physical activity and also acknowledged the city-wide #WALK30 campaign in the report.

Since the 1980s, Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research has led the annual Houston Area Survey exploring the region’s attitudes and beliefs. The survey is unique to our region and the longest-running metropolitan study in the United States.

This year, researchers administered the survey to over 3200 adults with over 1900 respondents who will serve as a permanent cohort to gauge how experiences, attitudes, and values are changing in future surveys. Next year, the Kinder Institute will double the cohort and include community members from Montgomery and Fort Bend Counties.
