The Texas Heart Institute Hosts 2024 Rodeo Roundtable: Cardiogenic Shock

On Saturday, March 2, 2024, The Texas Heart Institute hosted THI Rodeo Roundtable 2024: Cardiogenic Shock, a discussion group chaired by Drs. Joseph G. Rogers and O.H. (Bud) Frazier. Expert participants included renowned physicians from medical institutions across the United States and Europe.

The roundtable discussion focused on adult cardiogenic shock, device therapy for heart failure, and the role of durable mechanically assisted circulation in caring for these patients. The leaders also examined the clinical characteristics of this growing patient population, the importance of registry studies and randomized controlled clinical trials of treatment approaches, and the need to tailor device performance and design to meet clinical needs.

The findings from the meeting will be published in a peer-reviewed journal to further knowledge and understanding of shock phenotypes, therapeutic advances for heart failure, and the current unmet needs in mechanical circulatory support.

Dr. Rogers, President and CEO of The Institute, is an internationally recognized cardiologist, Adjunct Professor in the Division of Cardiology at Duke University, and a highly published thought leader in heart failure, heart transplantation and mechanically assisted circulation. Dr. Frazier is celebrated for his contributions to the field of mechanical circulatory support. He has performed over 1,200 heart transplants and implanted more than 900 left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), more than any other surgeon in the world.

The Texas Heart Institute has played a significant role in developing various mechanical circulatory support devices for over six decades. The Institute has been involved in the development of nearly every circulatory assist device currently in use, including mechanical assist devices, VADs, LVADs, total artificial hearts (TAHs), and simple heart pumps.

THI is renowned for its work in mechanical circulatory support through its Center for Preclinical Surgical & Interventional Research. Established in 1972, this center is advancing the understanding and treatment of cardiovascular disease with a particular focus on heart failure. The highly skilled staff at THI have extensive clinical experience and have collaborated with government agencies and biomedical companies to develop new treatments, techniques, and devices to enhance patient care.
