The Texas Heart Institute Journal Is Going Open Access
Houston, TX, June 27, 2023 – To promote the timely sharing of research that ultimately benefits patients worldwide, The Texas Heart Institute Journal will convert to a fully Open Access (OA) publication on July 15, 2023.
The new initiative aligns with the Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) federal guidance announced in August of 2022 to make the results of taxpayer-supported research immediately available to the American public without an embargo and at no cost.
The recommendation encourages open, transparent research so that researchers can collaborate and build on others’ work, to facilitate scientific breakthroughs at a faster pace.
The most notable change involves the author’s ability to retain copyright ownership by selecting an appropriate Creative Commons (CC) license that stipulates how the content can be reused. The following two licenses will be offered:
- CC BY: Allows reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, so long as attribution is given to the creator. The license allows for commercial use.
- CC BY-NC: Allows reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for noncommercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator.
Authors who submit work before July 15 may also request a CC license when the paper is accepted. The Journal will retain copyright on articles published before July 15.
Another important change involves an article processing charge (APC) of $750.00 (USD), which will be assessed on accepted articles. The APC will help support operations and other services, such as web hosting and metadata maintenance, which ensures that each article is registered, linked, and distributed. Discounts up to 100% will be available to eligible authors. Details will be posted to THIJ.org soon.
“These changes are aligned with national and global publishing developments and will increase the accessibility and visibility of articles published in The Journal,” said Dr. Zvonimir Krajcer, Editor-in-Chief of The Texas Heart Institute Journal.
