THI Cardiologist Discusses Probiotics and Blood Pressure with Healthline

HOUSTON (Oct. 20, 2023) — A recent study published this month in mSystems suggests that two strains of probiotics may offer protective benefits against high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

The study indicated that the probiotic strains Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus rhamnosus — which are found in foods like yogurt and cheese — may help to lower blood pressure.

Nearly half of all adults in the U.S. have hypertension, which increases their risk of several health issues, including heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. And while many of these patients take medication to treat the condition, healthy lifestyle changes and diet can help them take more control of their overall wellness.

Healthline interviewed Alexander Postalian, MD, a cardiologist at The Texas Heart Institute, for this story and he cautioned that this particular study was small and in mice, so therefore too early to draw definitive conclusions for humans. “As doctors, we like to see strong evidence in well-conducted human studies before subjecting our patients to new therapies,” he said. “Having an honest conversation with your doctor about what you’d like to try is always a good idea.”

To reduce hypertension, Dr. Postalian advises his patients to reduce sodium in their diets and maintain a healthy exercise regimen, in addition to finding effective ways of managing stress.
