THI President and CEO Contributes to National Media Discussion on Cannabis Use and CV Risk

HOUSTON (Nov. 13, 2023) — Healio Cardiology Today recently consulted Joseph G. Rogers, MD, President and CEO of The Texas Heart Institute, on two new studies linking marijuana use with elevated risk of major adverse cardiovascular events.

The article notes, “In one study, daily marijuana users had increased risk for incident heart failure compared with never users, and in the other, older nonsmokers with cannabis use disorder had increased risk for major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events compared with older participants who did not use tobacco or cannabis.”

Dr. Rogers provided an important perspective to the original article, which outlined the negative effects of cannabis on the cardiovascular system. “The medical community needs to be aware of this information and should be more diligent in screening patients for cannabis use and having a conversation with them about the risk implications.

“It is also important for the public to understand this risk. Once the use of tobacco was linked to CV and cancer outcomes, public awareness campaigns were initiated so that the population could make informed choices based on scientific knowledge. The same thing needs to happen as we begin to grow this important database around cannabis use—that the public understands the risks they are putting themselves in by utilizing cannabis products.”
