THI’s Dr. Jorge Escobar Shares Expertise on “Golden Hour” After Heart Attack with National Media
HOUSTON (Nov. 9, 2023) — Time is of the essence when it comes to heart attack symptoms, and knowing important steps to take during this critical period can mean the difference between life and death.
Jorge Escobar, MD, a cardiologist with The Texas Heart Institute Center for Cardiovascular Care, recently shared this information and other life-saving tips with The Healthy, a Reader’s Digest brand.
In an article titled, “Here’s How Long You Have to Get Help When You Feel Heart Attack Symptoms, Say Expert Doctors,” Dr. Escobar shared common heart attack symptoms and how quick medical treatment can drastically improve survival rates. He shared the importance of the “golden hour”—or 60 minutes following heart attack symptoms—and actions individuals can take to help ensure they experience the healthiest outcome possible.
In the event of heart attack symptoms, Dr. Escobar advises the following:
- Don’t walk or drive yourself to the hospital. Ambulances are equipped for rapid diagnosis and will transport you quickly to the appropriate medical facility.
- Sit or lie down quietly, trying to stay as calm as possible, and breathe normally. Panicking can increase your heart rate, putting more strain on your heart.
- Loosen any tight clothing to help reduce any constriction or discomfort.
- Refrain from taking any medication on your own unless you’ve received specific instructions from a health care provider.
He also emphasized that bystanders should call emergency services without delay at the first sign of heart attack symptoms, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and lightheadedness.
