Time Restricted Eating Research Unveiled at AHA Scientific Sessions Raises Concerns

This week, the American Heart Association held its annual Epidemiology and Prevention Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Scientific Sessions 2024 in Chicago. A preliminary research abstract reported a 91% higher risk of cardiovascular death for those who restricted their eating across fewer than eight-hour time spans.

Time-restricted eating is a growing trend in which food consumption is limited to a four-to-12-hour window. Although research has found that this type of meal timing is a form of intermittent fasting that improves cardiometabolic health measures such as blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol levels, the studies were short-term.

According to Dr. Joseph G. Rogers, President and CEO of The Texas Heart Institute, who was invited to comment, the preliminary analysis highlighted a concerning signal regarding the risks of time-restricted eating. It underscored the critical need for future research to define this observation’s biological basis.
